My Conversion to Electric Propulsion -or- Taking a Calculated Risk, Winning Big and so Becoming a Electric Yacht Dealer |
Above is ELATION, a Sparkman & Stephens / William Shaw 1956 design Midget Ocean Racing Club Centerboard Yawl. 24' LOA, 18' LWL 5,000# Draft Up/Down 2'9"/5'3" Full Keel Heavy Displacement piece of racing history. Her engine was an Universal Medalist Atomic 2 Gasoline 10HP 4 stroke so heavily constructed even the oil pan was cast iron. In early 2013 I had a very illuminating telephone chat with a wonderful woman who, when a girl, was raised on this boat. Stories she told informed me that the Atomic 2 engine was not dependable when it was new. No wonder I had struggled with it since 1982 when I came to own the boat. Past time to start thinking about repowering. After much research I concluded that my Texas lake sailing made Electric Propulsion the logical choice. The conversion was so sucessful, well beyond my hopes or dreams, that I am now proud to say I am the Texas dealer for Electric Yachts.
